OUR MISSION

Almas Libres aims to create safe and inclusive spaces that empower women and girls by bridging the gap in access to opportunities and resources through affordable programs across three pillars: sport, culture, and technology. By enhancing physical health, fostering cultural awareness, and driving technological innovation, we aim to nurture future leaders and cultivate a strong, supportive network that creates lasting, positive change in communities.

DID YOU KNOW? Almas Libres is an non-profit organisation meaning profits from our events, workshops, and trainings are reinvested into the communities we serve. This strengthens our mission of providing more women and girls with access to life-changing opportunities through the power of sport, culture, and technology.

OUR Community

MEET OUR TEAM

A community born from the power of a single football but built on the collective efforts of individuals within it.

From hosting Barcelona’s first women’s street football tournament in 2021 to organising weekly street football classes with our team of qualified coaches, our community is stronger than ever! We recently caught up with our coach, @carolmarin8 to learn more about how she got started in football and what inspired her to join Almas Libres.

𝙷𝙾𝚆 𝙳𝙸𝙳 𝚈𝙾𝚄 𝙵𝙸𝚁𝚂𝚃 𝙶𝙴𝚃 𝙸𝙽𝚅𝙾𝙻𝚅𝙴𝙳 𝙸𝙽 𝙵𝙾𝙾𝚃𝙱𝙰𝙻𝙻? I’ve practically had a ball at my feet since I was born, always playing football with my older brother. My family has always loved football and encouraged me to pursue it from a young age - not just on the #street with other kids but also on a football team, even though I was the only girl.

𝚆𝙷𝙰𝚃 𝙳𝙾 𝚈𝙾𝚄 𝙷𝙾𝙿𝙴 𝚃𝙾 𝙻𝙴𝙰𝚅𝙴 𝚃𝙷𝚁𝙾𝚄𝙶𝙷 𝚈𝙾𝚄𝚁 𝚆𝙾𝚁𝙺 𝚆𝙸𝚃𝙷 𝙰𝙻𝙼𝙰𝚂 𝙻𝙸𝙱𝚁𝙴𝚂? At Almas Libres, I want the women to enjoy training no matter their skill level, to be excited to come back each week, and to feel fulfilled by doing what they love. I want more women to believe they can do it, to know that football isn’t just for men. In the broader football world, I’ve spent many years in women’s elite #football, and the landscape has changed so much from when I first started. More girls are playing, clubs are committing to women’s sections, conditions are improving, and girls now have female role models. Every weekend, young girls come to watch us, and they want to be like us. That’s the most fulfilling part - leaving an #impact and paving the way.

𝙳𝙾 𝚈𝙾𝚄 𝚆𝙰𝙽𝚃 𝚃𝙾 𝙷𝙴𝙰𝚁 𝙼𝙾𝚁𝙴 𝙵𝚁𝙾𝙼 𝙲𝙰𝚁𝙾𝙻𝙸𝙽𝙰 𝙼𝙰𝚁𝙸𝙽? Sign up to our monthly newsletter, next month we hear more from Carolina in an exclusive interview about playing elite football and being part of Almas Libres.

MEET OUR TEAM

A few years ago, we came across a street basketball scene in Sants, a vibrant community of players. Among them was @pulposneakers, who was passionate about creating a safe space for women, and became the catalyst for the start of Almas Libres basketball community. At Almas Libres, our mission isn’t to reinvent the wheel but to strengthen and promote existing structures, enabling women and girls to engage in sport. For basketball we do this in collaboration with @streetball_bcn_sants.

Paula Fernández, also known as Pulpo, is orginally from Barcelona and has been playing basketball since the age of six. Basketball has been a major part of her life, both on and off the court. On the court, she finds an escape from the routine of daily life. Off the court, she dedicates herself to coaching young people who face challenges that make it difficult for them to join a club.

Paula has also been involved in the sneaker customisation scene for about four years. Her passion for sneakers and creativity, which she’s nurtured since childhood, led her to explore this art form. She taught herself the necessary techniques by researching online and connecting with other Spanish sneaker artists. Now, she works to combine this art with her love for basketball.

𝚆𝙷𝚈 𝙹𝙾𝙸𝙽 𝙰𝙻𝙼𝙰𝚂 𝙻𝙸𝙱𝚁𝙴𝚂 𝙲𝙾𝙼𝙼𝚄𝙽𝙸𝚃𝚈 𝙰𝚂 𝙰 𝙲𝙾𝙰𝙲𝙷? I am truly grateful to be part of a community like @__almaslibres, which empowers women through sports. I believe it’s a powerful way to encourage women to join the movement and feel safe and supported in all our activities, regardless of their skill level.

Meet Our Team

Due to popular demand for our weekly classes, we were excited to announce a new sport this year - skateboarding!

The driving force behind this addition is our new coach, @nadia_scherer. Originally from Innsbruck, Austria, Nadia is now based in Barcelona, and we couldn’t be happier to have her as part of our team.

For those of you who know Nadia, her smile is infectious and her positive energy and passion for getting others involved in skateboarding #inspire us daily.

𝙷𝙾𝚆 𝙳𝙸𝙳 𝚈𝙾𝚄 𝙶𝙴𝚃 𝙸𝙽𝚃𝙾 𝚂𝙺𝙰𝚃𝙸𝙽𝙶? I always wanted to do something different and was looking for a sport that would push me to my limits. Since I started about 5 years ago, I haven’t found any other sport that challenges me as much as skateboarding. You fall so many times, but you need to have the #courage to get back up and try again until it finally works. It can be really hard, but the joy you feel when you finally land a trick is unbelievable.

𝚆𝙷𝚈 𝙹𝙾𝙸𝙽 𝙰𝙻𝙼𝙰𝚂 𝙻𝙸𝙱𝚁𝙴𝚂 𝙲𝙾𝙼𝙼𝚄𝙽𝙸𝚃𝚈 𝙰𝚂 𝙰 𝙲𝙾𝙰𝙲𝙷? At Almas Libres, it’s so important to show women what is possible when we come together, and this is one of the things I love most about the community. Empowering women who may be afraid to try something new not only helps them grow, but it also inspires me and the entire team. We want women to reach their full potential, not just in sports, but in everyday life as well.

Join us every Thursday for our weekly skateboarding class from 19:30 to 20:30. All classes held in English, Catalan and Spanish. 🔗 Sign up through the link in our bio.

Conversations @ Juno House

Save the date: 26th September 2024

Our next @conversationsforthecurious is just around the corner, and for the first time, @junohouseclub is opening its doors to collaborate with a non-profit organisation. This is the first in a series for events we will host for women #leaders with Juno House.

Juno House is Barcelona’s first members’ club designed by and for women, with a focus on holistic well-being and professional development. It serves as both a catalyst for collaboration and a haven for balancing work and life. From #motherhood to career reinvention, Juno House provides a safe space where members can thrive and grow.

The women behind Juno House are Natalie Batlle, Liana Grieg, and Eva Massanas. Together, they bring local and international women together who are passionate about their careers and motivated to make a meaningful #impact on the city of Barcelona.

We’re excited to join forces with women who believe in #collaboration over competition — a philosophy that unites us all.

𝚆𝙷𝚈 𝙸𝚂 𝙰 𝙲𝙾𝙼𝙼𝚄𝙽𝙸𝚃𝚈 𝙻𝙸𝙺𝙴 𝙰𝙻𝙼𝙰𝚂 𝙻𝙸𝙱𝚁𝙴𝚂 𝙸𝙼𝙿𝙾𝚁𝚃𝙰𝙽𝚃?
Almas Libres is important because it brings women together and helps challenge the tradition of male dominance in sports. Through the programs we offer at Almas Libres, we raise awareness and promote #inclusivity, contributing to the empowerment and visibility of women.

𝚆𝙷𝚈 𝙳𝙸𝙳 𝚈𝙾𝚄 𝙹𝙾𝙸𝙽 𝙰𝙻𝙼𝙰𝚂 𝙻𝙸𝙱𝚁𝙴𝚂 𝙲𝙾𝙼𝙼𝚄𝙽𝙸𝚃𝚈 𝙰𝚂 𝙰 𝙲𝙾𝙰𝙲𝙷? After many years dedicated to basketball, I saw joining Almas Libres as an opportunity for me to leverage my sporting experiences and share them with other women. Almas Libres offers an opportunity to #inspire and to be inspired by other women’s journeys. I’m really excited to collaborate with an organisation which is led by women, for women and shares my values of #social justice and empowerment by promoting equality and equity.
