Welcome, GARAZI SANCHEZ
We’re excited to welcome Garazi Sanchez to the Almas Libres family as our newest ambassador. A world-class surfer from Getxo, Garazi brings not only her talent in the water but a deep sense of purpose, leadership, and connection to the ocean.
As someone who’s carved her own path in the surf world, on her own terms, Garazi embodies what it means to move with intention and inspire others along the way.
We recently had the chance to sit down with her over coffee and chat about how it all began, the challenges she’s faced as a woman in surf, and what being part of Almas Libres means to her. Here’s what she shared.
So Garazi, it’s great to have you join Almas Libres family. Tell us more about how got into surfing?
“I remember spending my weekends in a van, camping at Laga beach while my dad climbed in Ogoño and went kayak surfing in Laga. I used to stand up on a bodyboard at the shore and I think I found in the sea a place to channel all the energy I had. And that’s where it all began. I guess those weekend adventures made me dream of doing it big.”
Have you found any challenges in surfing being a woman?
“I suppose sport, like any other area, is a reflection of society. So yes, there are challenges, starting with simply believing that it’s something for you as a woman. Believing that you can do it, that you belong in high-performance environments, that you have the right to take up space, to travel alone, to compete, and to dream big in this world.
The good thing is that a lot has changed. There’s been real progress, and more and more women are stepping into the sport with confidence. But I still believe we have to keep evolving, not just in surfing, but in the way we view women in all spaces traditionally dominated by men”
Why did you decide to become an ambassador for Almas Libres?
“Almas Libres has created a space where women feel seen, supported, and empowered through surfing. It’s not just about the sport, it’s about building confidence, community, and a sense of belonging. That kind of impact is powerful, and I’m proud to be part of a project whose influence is truly seen and felt by so many women across Spain”
What’s something the ocean has taught you over the years?
“The ocean has a way of putting things in perspective. It teaches you patience, humility, and presence. You can’t control it, you can only learn to read it, to flow with it. That’s a lesson that goes way beyond surfing.”
What do you hope girls and women take away from your story?
“That there’s no one way to do things. You don’t have to fit into a certain mold to belong in sport, or in anything really. I hope they feel like they can take up space, chase what excites them, and do it in their own way.”
